The curl product industry wants you to believe you need 12 steps. You don't. After testing hundreds of products, here are the five essentials.
1. A Gentle Cleanser
Sulfate-free is the baseline. Look for cleansers that don't strip your natural oils. Co-washes work for some; others need a true cleanser. Listen to your scalp.
2. A Rich Conditioner
This is where you invest. Your conditioner should provide slip for detangling and moisture that lasts. Apply generously to mid-lengths and ends.
3. A Leave-In Conditioner
Lightweight moisture that you don't rinse out. This is your foundation for styling. Apply to soaking wet hair for best absorption.
4. A Styler (Gel or Cream)
This provides hold and definition. Gels work for most curl types; creams suit looser waves. Some prefer both, layered. Experiment to find your match.
5. An Oil or Sealant
The final step: seal in all that moisture. Use sparingly—a few drops warmed between palms and scrunched through styled or dry hair.
