Hair Porosity Explained: Your Complete Guide

Understanding hair porosity

Porosity is the single most important factor in choosing the right products for your hair. Yet most people have never heard of it.

What is Porosity?

Porosity refers to your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. It's determined by the condition of your cuticle—the outer layer of each hair strand.

The Three Types

Low Porosity

The cuticle lies flat, making it difficult for moisture to enter. Water beads up on your hair. Products tend to sit on top rather than absorb. Good news: once moisture gets in, it stays.

Medium Porosity

The cuticle is slightly raised—the ideal state. Moisture enters and exits at a balanced rate. Products work effectively without much adjustment.

High Porosity

The cuticle is very raised or damaged, with gaps. Moisture enters easily but escapes just as fast. Hair dries quickly and often feels dry despite products.

The Float Test

Drop a clean, product-free strand into water. If it floats, you're low porosity. Sinks slowly? Medium. Sinks immediately? High porosity.
